The Referees Committee of the Spanish Football Federation approved sanctions against the referees of the Real Madrid and Espanyol match due to the serious errors that affected the result of the match.
There was a clear shot in which Carlos Romero deserved a red card after a violent intervention on Kylian Mbappé, but the referee and the video assistant refused to send him off, and he then scored the winning goal for Espanyol in the match.
According to the newspaper “AS”, the Technical Committee of Referees held a meeting with all the referees of the first and second divisions on Monday morning, during which the president of the committee, Medina Cantalejo, gave a very harsh speech.
The president reprimanded the referees due to the many influential errors that occurred over the past two weeks, and issued a decree to punish 12 referees, including Muniz Ruiz and Iglesias Vilanova, the main referee and video assistant in the Espanyol and Real Madrid match.
The announced punishment imposed on Muniz and Vilanova is that they will be banned from working in the match between Atletico Madrid and Getafe in the Spanish King’s Cup, and they will also be suspended from officiating La Liga matches for a period of one month.
Barcelona were also complaining about the poor refereeing, as were Atletico Madrid, and Cantalejo was subjected to harsh attacks from all sides, who considered him to be overseeing one of the worst periods of Spanish refereeing in history.
