Group B of the 2025 Club World Cup witnessed a major surprise, as Atletico Madrid failed to secure a place in the knockout round.
The Rojiblancos were satisfied with a 1-0 victory over Botafogo in the third round match, thus finishing third and missing out on promotion to the Brazilian club.
Atletico Madrid’s progress in the group was extremely modest, starting with a poor 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, followed by a 3-1 victory over Seattle Sounders, and finally a victory over Botafogo.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Seattle 2-0, leaving the three teams tied on six points. However, goal difference places the French club in first place, Botafogo in second, and Atletico Madrid in third.
With this arrangement, Luis Enrique’s team will face the runner-up of Group A (Palmeiras, Inter Miami, Al-Ahly, or Porto), while Botafogo will face the group leaders.
