The surprises of Euro 2024 began with the start of the round of 16, where defending champion Italy was eliminated by Switzerland after losing 2-0.
The match, which was held at the Olympic Stadium in the capital, Berlin, clearly demonstrated that Italy’s modest levels in the group stage were not just a coincidence, but rather the real state of coach Luciano Spalletti’s squad.
Italy had narrowly won over Albania 2-1, then lost to Spain 1-0, and tied at the last minute with Croatia 1-1 to qualify from second place in the group.
On the other hand, Switzerland almost snatched the lead from the hosts, Germany, in the first group, had it not been for Niklas Volkrug’s goal in the last minute of the third round match, so Murat Yakin’s squad would qualify from second place.
At the opening of the round of 16, Switzerland took the lead in the first half through Remo Freuler, before Vargas scored the second goal in the first minute of the second half.
Thus, the Euro will have a new champion after Italy won the title with Roberto Mancini from Wembley Stadium in the last edition after beating England on penalties.
In the quarter-finals, Switzerland will wait for the winner of the England-Slovakia match scheduled for Sunday.
