The second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain saw one of the strangest incidents of the season.
Before the start of the match, as usual, the players lined up waiting for the Champions League anthem to be played. However, strangely, Villa Park officials played the Europa League anthem!
The faces of the Paris Saint-Germain players in particular were filled with astonishment and amazement, and this astonishment even spread to the match officials.
Aston Villa is participating in the Champions League for the first time in 42 years this season. During that time, the team has been relegated, returned to the Premier League, and participated in the Europa League more than once.
The English club lost the first leg in France 3-1, despite Unai Emery’s men having a good season and are currently seventh in the Premier League, one point away from participating in next season’s competition.
The players’ astonishment explains the strangeness of the event.
