The End of the Longest Saga of the 2025 Mercato: Gyökeres to Arsenal

Arsenal is poised to complete a deal to sign Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon, according to a report by David Ornstein of The Athletic on Tuesday.

Negotiations have stalled in recent days due to disagreements over the fee, and further reports emerged of Manchester United attempting to snatch the deal from the Gunners.

Now, the deal, worth €63.5 million (£54.8 million), plus €10 million (£8.6 million) in potential add-ons, is nearing completion, with only minor details remaining to be resolved.

Gyökeres, 27, scored 54 goals in 52 games last season, helping Sporting win the domestic double. Arsenal made it their obvious choice despite interest from other clubs, agreeing to a contract until 2030. His agent is said to have waived his commission to facilitate the move.

The Swedish international will become the latest signing under new Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta, joining Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, Kepa, Noni Madueke, and Christian Mosquera.

The saga between Gyökeres and Lisbon has dragged on since May, after the Portuguese club’s president refused to sell him for €60 million, as previously agreed. The player’s absence from training, along with a number of other incidents, ultimately made his negotiations with Arsenal extremely complicated and difficult.
