Szczesny has decided to accept Barcelona’s offer and remain with the Catalan club for another year, according to Sport.
The Polish goalkeeper joined Barcelona last October after Ter Stegen suffered a cruciate ligament injury, and in recent months has been a key factor in Barça’s domestic treble triumph.
Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, announced that he had offered Szczesny a one-year renewal, but has yet to receive a response.
According to Sport, Szczesny, after consulting with his family, has decided to stay with Barça for another year and is open to the idea of serving as a backup goalkeeper if necessary.
Barcelona is currently planning to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia and then sell Ter Stegen. Szczesny will serve as second choice goalkeeper, rotating between the two goalkeepers.
The 34-year-old appreciates the support and trust Barcelona and its fans have given him throughout the season, so he has no problem supporting Garcia or even Ter Stegen. He believes that continuing for another year would be beneficial for all parties.
It’s worth noting that Szczesny had announced his retirement last August, before receiving an offer from Barça in October and changing his mind to pursue a greater experience like playing at Camp Nou.
