Diego Simeone, the current Atletico Madrid coach, will not be coaching Inter next season, following a decision made by the Italian club’s management in the past few hours.
Spanish media outlets had previously indicated that an agreement had been reached between Simeone and Inter for him to arrive at the San Siro next season, replacing current coach Cristian Chivu.
However, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Inter’s management wants Chivu to remain in his position and has already begun negotiations to renew his contract.
The Romanian coach’s contract with Inter runs until June 2027, and now Beppe Marotta’s management wants to extend it until the summer of 2029 with a salary increase.
While it is true that Inter failed in Europe this season and were eliminated from the Champions League early in the round of 16, the management highly values Chivu’s work, especially domestically.
Morata and his teammates want to bolster Chievo with world-class players and consequently expect the former Parma coach to replicate Simone Inzaghi’s Champions League success while maintaining domestic dominance.
Inter currently leads the Italian league by a comfortable seven points over their closest rivals, AC Milan.
Diego Simeone’s future, or his next destination should he leave Atlético Madrid at the end of the season, remains uncertain, though he will likely remain a target for Inter until the very last moment.
