Legendary Lionel Messi has agreed to a surprise return to one of his former clubs, despite his current contract with Inter Miami.
Contrary to expectations and extensive reports linking him to a return to Spain, this move will not involve Barcelona. Instead, the “Flea” will return to where his professional journey began in Argentina.
The website “TuttoMercatoWeb” reported that Lionel Messi has given his initial approval to return to Newell’s Old Boys, the Argentine club where he played in the youth ranks before his famous transfer to Barcelona.
Messi will join the Argentine club in January 2027 on a six-month loan, after which he will return to Inter Miami to complete his contract, which runs until 2028.
Newell’s Old Boys president Ignacio Buero is playing a pivotal role in these negotiations, which have been ongoing for several months. His deputy, Juan Manuel Medina, confirmed the reports, stating that the club is working hard to finalize the deal soon. The main obstacle in previous discussions has been concerns about the safety and security of Messi and his family in Rosario (the club’s home city).
To overcome this obstacle, reports indicate that Buero is holding ongoing meetings with the governor of Santa Fe province, Maximiliano Polaro, to develop a comprehensive security plan to ensure Messi’s protection.
