Sporting eliminates Bodø/Glimt from the Champions League with a stunning comeback

Sporting Lisbon made history by eliminating Bodø/Glimt from the Champions League Round of 16 with a resounding 5-0 victory at the José Alvalade Stadium.

The Norwegian club had won the first leg 3-0 in front of their home fans, leading many to believe the tie was over and Bodø/Glimt would continue their run to the quarterfinals.

However, fueled by their passionate home support, Sporting pulled off a stunning upset. Inácio opened the scoring in the first half, followed by Gonçalves’ goal in the 61st minute. Suárez then leveled the aggregate score from the penalty spot in the 78th minute.

The match went to extra time after Sporting’s 3-0 lead in regulation time. During extra time, the home side scored their fourth goal just two minutes in through Araujo, before Rafael Nel sealed the victory with a fifth goal in the final minute.

Sporting Lisbon became only the fifth team in Champions League history to lose by three goals or more in the first leg of a knockout tie and then stage a remarkable comeback to qualify in the second leg.

Deportivo La Coruña was the first to achieve this feat against AC Milan in 2004, followed by Barcelona’s famous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, Roma’s comeback against Barcelona in 2018, and Liverpool’s comeback against Barça in the 2019 semi-final.

Sporting Lisbon will now await the winner of the Arsenal vs. Bayer Leverkusen quarter-final, with the first leg in Germany having ended in a 1-1 draw.
