Manchester United’s board has entered into negotiations with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take over as interim manager until the end of the current season.
The English club sacked Reuben Amorim after escalating disagreements between him and the board in the past month, appointing Darren Fletcher as interim manager until a permanent replacement is found.
United’s options to succeed Amorim are all under contract with different clubs, and it is impossible for those managers to leave their teams now. Therefore, the board has settled on appointing another interim manager (other than Fletcher) until next June.
According to Sky Sports, Solskjaer is very interested in the job and hopes for another stint with United. He is open to serving the club as interim manager until a permanent manager is appointed in June 2026.
Indeed, contact has taken place between United’s board and Solskjaer in recent hours, and it seems the Norwegian manager is currently the frontrunner to take over at the English giants, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Solskjaer succeeded Jose Mourinho as interim manager of Manchester United at the end of 2019. During his time in charge, he led the team in 19 matches, winning 14, losing only 3, and drawing 2. This impressive record prompted the board to appoint him permanently, and he remained in the position for a season and a half.
The 51-year-old’s last managerial experience was with Besiktas before his dismissal last August. He managed the Turkish club in 29 matches, winning 15, losing 9, and drawing 5.
Manchester United currently sits in sixth place in the Premier League table, just 3 points adrift of the top four.
