After a long career in European football, Sofiane Feghouli is moving to the Middle East for the first time, having announced his move to an Iraqi club.
The Algerian international will end up with newly promoted Amanat Baghdad FC, a move that has astonished many football fans around the world.
The 35-year-old Feghouli’s last experience was with Turkish club Karagumruk. His contract expired at the end of last season, and he became a free agent after which he agreed to move to Amanat Baghdad.
Feghouli will be the 10th signing for the promising Iraqi club and the fourth foreigner, following the signings of Tunisian Hamdi Al-Abidi, the striker for Club Africain, Gambian Amine Samate, and Uzbekistani Bakhtiyar Kosimov.
Feghouli is particularly well-known among Arab fans thanks to his extensive experience with Valencia, from 2011 until his departure to West Ham in 2016. He also played for Galatasaray in Turkey for five years after that.
Feghouli has enjoyed significant success with the Algerian national team and is one of the most capped players for the Desert Warriors. He was part of coach Djamel Belmadi’s squad that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
