Liverpool manager Arne Slott continues to stir controversy with statements attacking Liverpool and its management, belittling the club. His latest outburst came when asked about the possibility of being sacked if the Reds fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Liverpool currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, and are preparing for a crucial match against Sunderland on Wednesday. A defeat could very well lead to Slott’s dismissal, especially after last Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City at Anfield.
At the pre-match press conference for the Sunderland game, the Dutch manager was asked if he would be dismissed if Liverpool failed to secure a European spot for next season. He replied, “That’s a difficult question for me, because ultimately, I’m not the one who decides my future.”
He added provocatively about Liverpool’s situation before his arrival: “What I know is that the last time Liverpool didn’t qualify for the Champions League, it didn’t affect the manager’s future (Jurgen Klopp in 2023), but of course, that doesn’t guarantee anything.”
He continued, “For managers, especially at this club—and perhaps at other clubs—it’s not just about results, although they are essential. At some clubs, they also look at the development of the players and the team as a whole, and sometimes circumstances are taken into consideration.”
He concluded, “When I arrived here, I only signed Chiesa (summer 2024), and that was after a season playing in the Europa League. This has a huge impact on how this club is run; I’m fully aware of that.”
It’s worth noting that English media outlets previously confirmed that Liverpool was in talks with Xabi Alonso to take over from Slott, but so far, the Reds’ management prefers the Dutchman to stay until the end of the season and then appoint the Spaniard at the start of next season, unless they feel that the Champions League is in real danger.
