Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes Paris Saint-Germain’s financial strength was one of the main reasons for their 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Club World Cup.
“When PSG needed a left-winger, they spent €70 million and signed Kvaratskhelia,” Simeone told the media after the defeat.
Simeone went on to justify the crushing defeat in their opening World Cup match by saying, “We played poorly in the first half, and PSG imposed their style of play with great confidence. We had a chance through Griezmann, but we didn’t take advantage, and the opponent punished us with a second goal.”
He added, “Paris is a young and distinguished team, and they were able to decide the match with merit.”
He concluded, “As I said, Paris Saint-Germain is a truly great team, and Enrique was clear about his technical needs. When he asked for a right winger, the club paid €70 million and brought him the best option last January.”
What’s strange about Simeone’s statements is that Atlético Madrid, during his time, is one of the biggest spenders in Europe, yet the returns are not commensurate with the scale of the expenditure.
In any case, Atlético still has a chance to advance to the Club World Cup round of 16, where they will face the American Seattle Sounders and then Botafogo, two matches that should be within Simeone’s grasp.
