Arsenal will be without one of their key players this season, Mikel Merino, due to a serious injury sustained during last week’s match against Manchester United.
The Spanish international underwent tests that revealed significant damage to his foot, requiring surgery, according to an official statement released by Arsenal on Monday morning.
The Gunners did not specify the duration of Merino’s absence from Mikel Arteta’s squad, only stating that his time away from the pitch will be lengthy, with the current objective being his return before the end of the season.
Marca reports that Merino’s injury is very serious, and there is a strong possibility he will not play for Arsenal again this season, and may also miss the 2026 World Cup with the Spanish national team.
In the past few hours, Arsenal has been actively searching for a replacement for their midfield star, and some English media outlets have indicated that the London club is in negotiations with Newcastle to sign Sandro Tonali.
It is worth noting that Merino has been one of Arsenal’s most important pillars in recent times. In addition to his ability to play in midfield, he has made a significant impact offensively, having scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists in 33 matches this season.
