Nico Williams’s transfer from Athletic Bilbao to Barcelona has become highly questionable after negotiations between the player and the Catalan club collapsed recently due to disagreements, particularly with the Basque star’s agent.
Catalan media previously confirmed that an agreement had been reached between Williams and Barcelona, and that Barça now needed to meet the player’s €62 million release clause in his contract with Bilbao to formalize the deal.
However, according to Sport, the final hours witnessed significant tensions between Barcelona officials on one side and Williams’ agent on the other, due to fears of the stifling economic crisis at Camp Nou.

Barcelona did reach a verbal agreement with Williams’ agent regarding the length of the contract and salary, but as soon as they began to convert this agreement into official written contracts, disputes began and negotiations stalled completely.
Williams’ agent made it clear that the player had concerns about Barcelona failing to register him, and that the 22-year-old was not willing to sit out the match until next January if he signed and the club failed to register him.
For this reason, Nico’s agent asked Barcelona for written guarantees in the contract that he would be registered, with a clause allowing the player to leave for free if the Catalan club failed to register him.
Barcelona’s response was clear: it rejected the idea and insisted that the player would join without guarantees. It also made verbal promises that his registration would not be impossible, and that all the pressure exerted by Athletic Bilbao and La Liga did not match the club’s recently improved economic situation.

Relations strained between Barcelona and Williams’ agent
The report confirmed that the relationship between Williams’ agent and Barcelona management has been extremely tense in recent hours, and that communication between the two parties has been completely suspended.
Despite everything, Joan Laporta’s administration is confident that they can secure a final deal in the coming days, specifically before July 9, when Williams will become a new player with the Blaugrana.

The Bavarian club is willing to pay the release clause immediately and sign Williams without any problems, but the Spanish international remains determined to remain committed to Barcelona and considers it its preferred option this transfer window.
