Cristiano Ronaldo, the football legend and star of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr FC, has stirred controversy once again, stating that judging a player as the greatest of all time solely based on winning the World Cup is completely unfair.
Comparisons between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have never ceased, but the prevailing opinion over the last three years is that the battle has been decided in favor of the Argentine star after he led his country to victory in the 2022 World Cup. This doesn’t seem to sit well with Ronaldo, who believes he is the greatest player to ever grace the pitch.
In an interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo said, “Do you want the best player in history to be determined by a tournament with only six or seven matches? Do you think that’s fair?”
He added, “If you ask me if winning the World Cup was a dream for me, I’d say no, it’s not a dream for me!”
Despite stating that winning the World Cup isn’t a dream, Ronaldo hopes to lift the trophy with Portugal in 2026. He also linked this to his upcoming wedding to his girlfriend Georgina, whom he described as the love of his life.
Ronaldo continued, “We haven’t planned a wedding date yet, but she doesn’t like big parties and prefers something private. I’ll respect that. I think it will be after the World Cup, and I hope we’ll have the trophy with us.”
In the same interview, Ronaldo also said he disagrees with his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney’s opinion that Messi is the best player of all time, stating that he “will no longer be modest.”
It’s worth noting that Ronaldo has participated in five previous World Cups, with his best achievement being reaching the semi-finals in 2006, when Portugal ultimately finished fourth.
