Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazario has showered Lionel Messi with praise following his spectacular hat-trick against Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With this treble, Messi surpassed Ronaldo’s iconic World Cup goal tally, reaching 16 goals to tie with Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s all-time leading top scorer.
Far from being bitter about losing his record, “O Fenômeno” expressed his absolute admiration. Commenting on Messi breaking the milestone, Ronaldo said:
“Records are made to be broken, and when it comes to the person breaking them (Messi), it doesn’t surprise any football fan in the world.”
“Every single time Messi steps onto the pitch, everything becomes historic and elegant,” the Real Madrid and Barcelona legend added.
“It is time for the world to stop hiding it and accept the fact that he is the greatest player of all time (GOAT). He continues to deliver outstanding performances every season and at the World Cup. It was an unforgettable and historic night.”
Messi Breaks Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup Record
In addition to matching Klose’s record, Messi has officially become the oldest player in World Cup history to score a hat-trick, breaking the previous record held by his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Looking ahead, Argentina will play their next World Cup match on Monday against Austria, before Lionel Scaloni’s men conclude their group stage campaign against Jordan on June 28.
