Cristiano Ronaldo set another historic record, this time with Portugal, after scoring two goals against Hungary in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ronaldo scored the first goal with a brilliant touch from Nelson Semedo’s right-hand cross. He repeated the feat for the second goal, but the cross came from Nuno Mendes’s left.

Ronaldo’s goal brought his tally in World Cup qualifiers since 2004 to 40, breaking the record held by Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz (39 goals).
Argentine legend Lionel Messi comes in third with 36 goals, followed by Iranian Ali Daei with 35 goals, and then Polish Robert Lewandowski with 33 goals.
Overall, Ronaldo’s career total now stands at 949 goals, leaving him just 51 goals away from achieving his greatest dream of reaching the 1,000th goal before the end of his career.
Ronaldo could have celebrated qualifying for the World Cup today, but Dominik Szoboszlai equalized for Hungary in the 91st minute, ending the match 2-2, and postponing the announcement of the Sailors’ qualification until the next international break.
