Manchester City star Rodri has expressed his displeasure with the Spanish media for taking his comments about a potential move to Real Madrid out of context and not presenting his statements in full, leaving many confused.
The Spanish international appeared in an interview with Onda Cero, where he confirmed that he wouldn’t mind joining Real Madrid, even though he had previously played for their arch-rivals and city rivals, Atlético Madrid.
Rodri’s contract with Manchester City expires in the summer of 2027, and there is considerable uncertainty surrounding renewal negotiations. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has only stated that at some point he will sit down with the English club to discuss his future.
Rodri appeared again before the media after Spain’s friendly match against Serbia on Friday, and he seemed annoyed that the interview had been edited and not presented in its entirety to understand his meaning.
The City star said, “I’m used to it. If they cut out what they want from a 50-minute interview, I don’t have much to say.”
He added, “I’m a straightforward person. The full interview is available for anyone who wants to listen to it, not just snippets.”
It’s clear that Rodri wanted to convey that his response to the idea of moving to Real Madrid was in the context of a question about Atlético Madrid. He also indicated that he’s open to staying at City and that his statement wasn’t quoted in full, as he emphasized how happy and grateful he is for his time at the Etihad Stadium.
