Reports: Mbappe unlikely to play against Manchester City

Cadena COPE reports that Kylian Mbappe is unlikely to play in Real Madrid’s Champions League round of 16 first leg against Manchester City.

Mbappe has been sidelined since last Tuesday due to knee pain that has plagued him since December. Real Madrid’s medical staff have decided to rest the Frenchman and not rush his return.

The Champions League draw has pitted Real Madrid against Manchester City in a rematch, with the first leg scheduled for Wednesday, March 11.

As of now, it seems most likely that Mbappe will miss the match, as the medical staff are inclined to keep him out of action for at least two weeks to ensure a full recovery.

There is concern that if Mbappe plays early and puts further strain on his knee, he could require surgery that would end his season and potentially rule him out of the 2026 World Cup. Therefore, Real Madrid officials prefer to proceed cautiously and not rush his return, regardless of the upcoming match.

If things go as hoped, Mbappe is expected to be present for the return leg scheduled for March 17 at the Etihad Stadium. The worst-case scenario is his absence until the return from the international break next April.
