Reports: Jose Gomez is the new coach of Al Ahly of Egypt

The Saudi newspaper Al-Youm revealed that the Al Ahly administration has reached an agreement with Jose Gomez to lead the first football team, succeeding the dismissed coach Marcel Koller.

Al Ahly appointed Emad El-Nahhas as interim coach until a new foreign coach is hired. Since then, several names have been linked to the Red Castle, the latest being former Sevilla coach Garcia Pimienta.

Jose Gomez was among the names heavily circulated since Koller’s dismissal, given his extensive experience in the Middle East and his proven ability as a distinguished coach during his first stint in Egypt with Zamalek, which ended last December.

The Portuguese coach is currently coaching Al-Fateh of Saudi Arabia and has recently succeeded in practically saving the team from relegation in what has been described as a “miracle” after taking over the team in last place and, with a series of victories, revitalizing it.

Al-Youm newspaper reports that Al-Ahly officials have been in contact with Gomez for some time, and in the last few hours, the two parties reached a preliminary agreement. The coach will sign a two-year contract with the Egyptian club, receiving a monthly salary of $150,000.

The matter will be finalized after the upcoming match against Al-Wahda, where, if Al-Fateh wins, they will be officially safe from relegation. At that point, the coach can leave and join Al-Ahly, and the announcement will be made to the fans.

It’s worth noting that Gomez took over as coach of Zamalek in February 2024, successfully leading the Whites to the CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Super Cup titles, while losing the Egypt Cup and Egyptian Super Cup finals.
