Liverpool star Ibrahima Konaté is on the verge of renewing his contract with the English club, despite interest from several major European clubs, most notably Real Madrid.
The French defender’s contract at Anfield expires at the end of this season, and recent reports had suggested he would leave Liverpool in search of a new challenge outside the Premier League.
Since the start of the season, Liverpool’s management has been trying to renew Konaté’s contract, as he was reportedly in negotiations with Real Madrid, who are looking to bolster their central defense next summer with a free transfer to the Santiago Bernabéu.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Liverpool and Konaté are nearing a successful conclusion, and the two parties are close to reaching a comprehensive agreement that would see the 25-year-old stay with the Reds for three more years.
Only a few final details remain to be settled, and Liverpool are confident that all the details will be finalized in the coming days, with the announcement of Konaté’s renewal expected before the end of the current season.
Meanwhile, negotiations between Real Madrid and Konaté have practically stalled since last November, as the club’s management has expressed doubts about whether signing the Frenchman is the best option after his clear decline in form this season.
It’s worth noting that Konaté has been one of Liverpool’s most-used players this season, making 43 appearances and scoring two goals, one in the Premier League and the other in the Champions League.
