La Liga announced its withdrawal from the planned Barcelona vs. Villarreal match in Miami, USA, amid widespread outrage in Spain over this exceptional decision.
Barcelona and Villarreal had agreed to play the match in the US, and La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation supported this move. UEFA and FIFA agreed to play the match outside of Spain for the first time in history.
Real Madrid led a fierce campaign against holding the match in the US, believing it would threaten the fairness of the competition. La Liga players also expressed their anger at the idea, expressing their anger by not playing for 35 seconds in the last round of La Liga matches.
Real Madrid contacted the Spanish High Sports Council to prevent the match from being held in the US, along with many other steps, including a massive media campaign. It seems that all of this has worked.
In an official statement, La Liga wrote, “La Liga expresses its deep regret that this project, which represented an unprecedented historic opportunity to internationalize Spanish football, will not be able to go ahead.”
The statement continued, “La Liga confirmed that the project fully complied with federal regulations and did not affect the integrity of the competition, as confirmed by the competent bodies that monitor the implementation of the regulations. It noted that its opposition was based on other reasons unrelated to the law or regulations.”
It concluded, “The company organizing the match in Miami was informed of the decision to cancel the event due to the uncertainty that has prevailed in Spain in recent weeks.”
Thus, the Barcelona-Villarreal match will be played at the Estadio de la Cerámica in Valencia as normal on December 21, the last La Liga match of 2025.
