José Mourinho has given Real Madrid the green light to pursue Manchester City midfielder Rodri, making the Spanish star one of the club’s primary transfer targets during the summer transfer window.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Real Madrid’s hierarchy has decided to make a formal push for the 30-year-old Ballon d’Or winner, who has expressed his desire to join the Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabéu and return to La Liga.
Representatives from Real Madrid recently met with Rodri’s agents in Madrid to hash out personal terms. The Spanish giants are reportedly prepared to offer the midfielder a contract running through June 2030 before opening official club-to-club negotiations with Manchester City.
Manchester City Calm as Formal Talks Await
Despite mutual interest between player and club, formal negotiations between Real Madrid and Manchester City have yet to begin. Journalist José Félix Díaz reports that Manchester City has received no official bid so far and remains calm, considering the situation under control with Rodri’s contract running through June 2027.
Díaz added that relations between the two European powerhouses remain excellent. Should Real Madrid proceed with an official bid, they intend to contact Manchester City directly out of respect for their working relationship.
While Manchester City continues to push for a contract extension, negotiations have stalled, creating an opening for Real Madrid to strike. Rodri comes off an extraordinary campaign, having led Spain to victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup while earning the tournament’s Golden Ball award. The midfielder is currently scheduled for minor back surgery, which may briefly delay his start to the new season.
