According to the newspaper AS, current Benfica coach Jose Mourinho is no longer in Real Madrid’s plans and will not be Raul Arbeloa’s successor at the helm of the club next season.
The Special One’s name had been linked with a return to the Santiago Bernabeu next summer, as Real Madrid searched for a new coach should they decide to terminate Arbeloa’s contract.
According to the Spanish newspaper, it is now unlikely that Florentino Perez will bring Mourinho back to Real Madrid after his stance during the Vinicius Junior controversy in the Benfica match.
Instead of siding with Vinicius, Mourinho defended his player Gianluca Brestiani, asserting that the Brazilian player always stirs up trouble on various pitches by provoking players and fans.
This stance angered even Real Madrid fans towards Mourinho, which will make Perez think twice before hiring him for a second time, 13 years after his first stint.
AS points out that Arbeloa also demonstrated his technical abilities against Mourinho, perhaps showing in one way or another that the Portuguese coach’s tactical ideas are no longer as effective as they once were. Real Madrid dominated Benfica almost completely and deservedly won.
Arbeloa also displayed composure in his management of the match, unlike Mourinho, who indulged his favorite pastime of creating controversy and arguing with the referee until he received a red card. This is hardly encouraging for Real Madrid’s management to consider signing Mourinho if the need arises.
