Real Madrid had a golden opportunity to sign two big stars during the current winter transfer window, but surprisingly, club president Florentino Pérez insisted on his strict policy of avoiding signings in January.
Real Madrid is suffering from a clear crisis in defense and midfield due to a shortage of available players, a high number of injuries, and a decline in the form of some players. Therefore, it was expected that Pérez would break with tradition and enter the winter market in search of reinforcements.
According to ESPN, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and Al-Hilal star Rúben Neves offered their services to Real Madrid this January. However, the Merengues’ management ultimately refused to sign either player.
Neves’ contract with Al-Hilal expires at the end of the current season, so a transfer this winter would not have cost Real Madrid much. The same applies to Bruno, although the Portuguese international’s contract with the Red Devils expires in a year and a half.
Despite the pressing need for midfield reinforcements following the departures of Kroos and Modric, Perez decided against signing Neves or Fernandez, preferring to wait until next summer and acquire younger players at a more affordable cost.
Perez and his board believe that Real Madrid’s current squad is capable of success and possesses sufficient depth to withstand injuries and dips in form. Furthermore, Alvaro Arbeloa has remained silent and has not requested any new signings, preferring to rely on younger players when needed.
It’s worth noting that Real Madrid currently sits second in La Liga, one point behind Barcelona, and will face Benfica in the Champions League Round of 16 play-off round in 2026.
