Real Madrid have reassessed their stance on signing Manchester City midfielder Rodri following his standout performances for Spain at the 2026 World Cup.
According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, a faction within the Los Blancos board is actively pushing to secure an agreement for Rodri during the current summer transfer window.
Moretto added that Real Madrid have already obtained the player’s approval for a move to the Santiago Bernabéu, with both parties close to reaching an understanding on personal terms.
Club president Florentino Pérez has also shifted his position. Pérez is now far more open to finalizing the transfer, having previously shown reservation toward signing the 30-year-old.
This change of heart comes in the wake of Rodri’s dominant campaign leading Spain to the 2026 World Cup trophy, where he was awarded the official Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
Despite the alignment between Real Madrid and the player, Moretto emphasized that no official negotiations have taken place with Manchester City yet, meaning an agreement between the two clubs has not been reached.
However, Rodri’s contract situation grants Real Madrid significant leverage: his current deal with Manchester City expires in June 2027, leaving the English champions to decide whether to sell him this summer or risk losing him for free a year later.
