A new war has erupted between Barcelona and Real Madrid, this time on the media front. The reason behind it was the Catalan club’s channel’s mockery of Real Madrid legend Luka Modric.
Barcelona played a friendly against South Korean side FC Seoul on Thursday, and the match was broadcast on Barça TV. Hansi Flick’s side won 7-3 in the second preseason match.
During the match, the Barça TV commentator said, “We didn’t give Luka Modric the recognition he deserves. His last great service was an assist for Kounde in the Copa del Rey final. That’s where our appreciation comes from.”
Immediately after this statement, Real Madrid fans and journalists alike continued to attack Barcelona and its channel. They considered the commentator’s actions to be a severe “lack of respect” that shouldn’t exist in an official institution affiliated with a club the size of Barça.
Renowned journalist Tomás Roncero, known for his closeness to Real Madrid’s management, commented on the incident, “Barcelona has once again demonstrated its lack of emotional education, its disrespect for history, and its incurable inferiority complex toward Real Madrid.”
Roncero continued, “Luka Modrić has won six Champions League titles with Real Madrid, more than Barcelona has ever won in its entire history (only five).”
Real Madrid’s official channel launched a fierce attack against its Barcelona counterpart, while Joan Laporta’s administration remained completely calm and did not comment. Catalan newspapers indicate that the club believes the commentator’s remarks were not disrespectful, but rather part of the historic rivalry between the two giants of Spanish football.
