The altercation erupted when Leandro Paredes confronted Eric García, grabbing the Spanish defender by the neck and shoving him amidst rising friction between both squads.
Gavi immediately intervened to defend his teammate, but Paredes clashed with him as well, striking the midfielder across the face before both players hit the turf, prompting players and staff from both sides to rush in and separate them.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and several players, led by Thiago Almada, were forced to physically restrain Paredes and pull him away from the Spanish contingent as verbal altercations continued around the center circle.
Meanwhile, Nicolás Otamendi exchanged heated words with Rodri and several Spanish players, while Scaloni himself was seen shouting angrily toward a member of the opposing side before the situation was de-escalated.
According to French outlet L’Équipe, the referee brandished a red card to Paredes after the final whistle. Paredes had already been booked shortly after coming on as a substitute, while Argentina had finished the match with ten men following Enzo Fernández’s earlier dismissal.
