Former Barcelona player Gerard Piqué has targeted Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa as part of his latest controversial marketing campaign for La Liga.
In a famous 2015 interview, Arbeloa said, “One day I’ll see Piqué in a comedy club talking about Madrid,” to which Piqué replied, “Arbeloa claims to be my friend, but he’s just someone I know. He’s a coaching funnel.”
Today, a huge banner appeared on Gran Vía in Madrid, bearing the message: “We’re not very well known, but we will be.”
The message seems innocent on the surface, but it carries a clear and direct reference: the word “conocidos” (well known) has the “cono” part highlighted in bold, which means “funnel” in Spanish.
According to Marca, La Liga recorded chants during Real Madrid’s recent 2-0 victory over Valencia that included: “You’re a scumbag, Arbeloa, you’re a scumbag.”
Piqué often leverages his playing career to promote La Liga, for example, previously used a photo of himself with Neymar, captioned “I’m staying at Barcelona,” before the Brazilian star ultimately joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.
