Paris Saint-Germain continued its continental dominance and was crowned the 2026 UEFA Super Cup champion after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in the match held on Wednesday evening at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.
Entering the clash as the UEFA Champions League winners, the Parisian team imposed its control early on, opening the scoring in the 20th minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who capitalized on a pass from Désiré Doué to unleash a powerful shot from inside the penalty area.
Aston Villa did not give up and managed to equalize before the end of the first half. John McGinn sent a cross towards the far post, met by a direct strike from Bryan Madjo that hit the crossbar and settled into the net in the 44th minute.
Madjo scored a historic goal, becoming the youngest player to find the back of the net in a UEFA Super Cup final at 17 years and 212 days old. He also became the youngest player to start a match in the tournament since the inception of its current format.
Paris Saint-Germain regained the lead an hour into the game thanks to Désiré Doué, who scored the second goal in the 60th minute. Aston Villa attempted to get back into the match during the remaining minutes, but Paris calmly handled the English team’s pressure, successfully maintaining their lead until the final whistle to add another continental title to their trophy cabinet.
Paris Saint-Germain Retains the Title
Paris Saint-Germain became the first team to retain the UEFA Super Cup since Real Madrid, who achieved the feat in 2016 and 2017. The French club had previously won the tournament for the first time in its history in 2025, beating Tottenham on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
Paris is experiencing one of the most successful periods in its history under the guidance of Luis Enrique. Since his arrival in the summer of 2023, he has led them to domestic dominance, before securing the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2025 and retaining the continental title in 2026, alongside winning back-to-back UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Enrique took his tally to 13 trophies with Paris Saint-Germain, cementing his status as the most decorated manager in the club’s history. His total European titles as a manager reached 6 (3 UEFA Champions League titles and 3 UEFA Super Cups).
The Spanish coach boasts a perfect record in European club finals, triumphing in all six he has contested. These include two titles with Barcelona in 2015 and four with Paris across 2025 and 2026. Furthermore, the victory over Aston Villa marked his third win in three UEFA Super Cup final appearances.
