Joan Laporta pledged that FC Barcelona “will not stop” after being re-elected as club president for another five years.
The Catalan club announced on Sunday that Laporta had won with just over 68% of the vote, beginning his second consecutive term – and fourth overall – on July 1st.
His opponent, Victor Font, received nearly 30%, while the remaining votes were either invalid or void.
Laporta, who took office in March 2021, resigned last month in accordance with the club’s statutes in order to seek re-election.
The 63-year-old described the result as “resounding,” adding: “It gives us great strength and makes us unstoppable; no one will stop us. Exciting years lie ahead, which will be the best of our lives.”
In his victory speech, Laporta promised to strengthen the first team and complete the redevelopment project at Camp Nou. The number of votes cast was approximately 48,500 – a turnout of 42.34% – with Laporta receiving 32,934 votes compared to 14,385 votes for the 53-year-old Font.
It is worth noting that Laporta assumed the presidency of Barcelona during a very difficult period after the previous administration had burdened the club with debt. He quickly succeeded in finding solutions, and the Catalan club regained its dominance in domestic competitions under his leadership, most recently winning the domestic treble last season.
