Officially: Barcelona Terminates Oriel Romeu’s Contract

Barcelona has officially announced the termination of its contract with Oriel Romeu, by mutual consent.

Romeu spent last season on loan at Girona, but received few offers during the summer transfer window and was completely out of the plans of coach Hansi Flick.

Barcelona’s management preferred to grant the player immediate freedom and not wait until next January, allowing him to move to any club in the leagues where the summer transfer window was still open.

Romeu joined Barcelona in the summer of 2023 at the request of Xavi Hernandez at the time, but he failed to replace Sergio Busquets as the Catalan coach had hoped.

Romeo’s next destination remains unknown, but some reports suggest he is seriously considering retiring from football and ending his long career, which has spanned back to 2004.

The 33-year-old Romeo began his career with Espanyol’s youth system, before moving to Barcelona. He then moved to Chelsea in 2011, played on loan at Valencia and Stuttgart, and played for Southampton and Girona before returning to Barça in 2023.
