Manchester City announced in an official statement on Monday the appointment of Italian manager Enzo Maresca as the first-team head coach on a three-year contract, succeeding the legendary Pep Guardiola.
For months, City’s management had identified Maresca as their top target to replace Guardiola. The Italian is a familiar face at the club, having previously managed the Under-23 squad and served as Guardiola’s assistant during the historic treble-winning 2022–23 season.
Despite being dismissed by Chelsea last January, Maresca was still contractually bound to the London club. Consequently, Manchester City had to pay Chelsea a €20 million compensation fee to release the Italian tactician and secure his move to the Etihad Stadium.
In his first remarks following his return to City, Maresca said: “Manchester City is a club I know very well, and to be given the opportunity to manage a team like this is a massive opportunity for me.”
He added: “This is my third spell here; I know the club inside out, and I understand the expectations and what the fans demand. I want to thank the board for their trust in me. I cannot wait to get started in my new role.”
Maresca’s first major managerial breakthrough away from Manchester City came with Leicester City, where he successfully guided the Foxes back to the Premier League. He then moved to Chelsea, leading them to titles in both the UEFA Conference League and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
