Official: Di Maria Announces His Transfer to This Club

A great deal of controversy has surrounded Angel Di Maria’s name in recent months after it became clear that he would not continue with Benfica when his contract expired at the end of the current season.

Di Maria was linked with several European clubs, including a possible move to Benfica. It was also rumored that he might join Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.

Ultimately, however, Di Maria chose to return to his hometown of Argentina and play for his boyhood club, Rosario Central, as his final dance before retiring.

The 37-year-old played for Rosario from 1992 to 2005 before moving to Benfica, and he wanted his final football match to be for his parent club, which had given him everything.

Di Maria is returning to Argentina despite facing death threats if he moved to Rosario.

The incident occurred in March 2024. Di María said his family received a box containing a pig’s head, a bullet in his forehead, and a note stating that if he returned to Rosario Central, the next head would be that of his daughter Pia.

These threats against Di María were not for sporting reasons; according to Argentine authorities, they were simply an attempt by criminal organizations in the city to demonstrate their power.
