Not Lage… Al-Ahly Reaches Agreement with New Coach

Al-Ahly has finalized the appointment of a new coach and is about to announce the permanent successor to sacked Spanish coach José Rivero.

In recent days, Al-Ahly intensified negotiations with Bruno Lage and Urs Fischer, but a financial agreement with them proved impossible due to both clubs’ desire to earn $5 million.

Egyptian media reported that Al-Ahly had finalized an agreement with Danish coach Thomas Thomasberg, and that he would be officially announced as the Red Castle’s new coach within hours.

Thomasberg’s experience as coach of FC Midtjylland was the best of his career. He took over there in March 2023, winning the Danish League and the Danish Cup, before leaving the team earlier this month.

Thomasberg was also the coach of FC Midtjylland when Imam Ashour joined the Danish club three years ago, a short six-month stint before returning to the Egyptian Premier League with Al-Ahly.

Overall, during this tenure, Thomas Thomasberg led Midtjylland in 115 matches, winning 66, drawing 22, and losing 27 in all competitions.

With the conclusion of Monday’s match against Zamalek, the 50-year-old Thomasberg is expected to take over, or the job may be postponed until the start of next week’s international break.
