Mauricio Pochettino has declared that any punishment meted out to Manchester City will prove insufficient to remedy the damage caused by the club’s financial irregularities during their era of English football dominance.
The United States national team head coach made his comments following reports indicating that City have been found guilty of 114 out of 115 alleged charges, even as official confirmation of the verdict and any subsequent sanctions remains pending.
“There is no sanction that can repair what happened,” Pochettino stated, adding that proving non-compliance on such a scale indicates that the Premier League’s regulatory mechanisms have suffered profound damage.
“It is only fair to ask where the oversight was,” he continued, pointing out that clubs like Everton and Nottingham Forest were subjected to points deductions and financial fines for far fewer and less expansive infractions.
The Argentine manager revisited his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur, questioning why financial constraints were applied so strictly to his club while similar rigor was seemingly absent for rivals. He added that supporters and competing teams effectively endured an “era of deception” if the ruling is definitively upheld.
Pochettino managed Tottenham between 2014 and 2019, guiding the North London side to a second-place Premier League finish with 86 points in 2016–2017, alongside reaching the 2015 League Cup final and the 2019 UEFA Champions League final without lifting silverware.
The allegations against Manchester City center on providing inaccurate financial information, inflating sponsorship revenues, disguising payments related to player and managerial remuneration, and failing to cooperate with the league’s investigation. City have consistently denied all wrongdoing, maintaining that legal proceedings are ongoing.
