Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffered a new injury just days after returning from a previous one that sidelined him for nearly two weeks.
Neuer injured his leg in a match against Werder Bremen in mid-February, causing him to miss the games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund.
Neuer made his return to action on Friday, when Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 at the Allianz Arena.
On Saturday evening, Bayern Munich announced that Neuer had suffered a tear in his left calf muscle, without specifying the expected duration of his absence.
Initially, Manuel Neuer will miss Tuesday’s Champions League round of 16 first leg against Atalanta in Bergamo.
Neuer is not expected to return before the end of the international break at the start of April, meaning that promising young goalkeeper Jonas Ørbig will likely take his place.
Neuer’s contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of this season, and the 40-year-old’s numerous injuries may lead him to retire rather than renew for another year.
