Neuer Ends Controversy, Announces Final Position on Returning to German National Team

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has ended the controversy surrounding his possible return to represent Germany at the 2026 World Cup.

The 40-year-old retired from international football last year after Euro 2024. In recent months, following his impressive performances, reports have emerged that Julian Nagelsmann might call him up for the upcoming World Cup.

Neuer’s agent said last week that all options were open, which has fueled the controversy, especially in light of Ter Stegen’s injury and fans’ dissatisfaction with Oliver Baumann.

However, Neuer decided to refute these rumors once and for all. In statements after Saturday’s match against Hamburg, he said, “I have decided not to play for the national team again.”

When asked whether this decision was final or reversible, Neuer replied, “This is a final decision. I will not play for the national team again.”

Ter Stegen is expected to return from his injury at the beginning of the new year and then move to a new club on loan, with Nagelsmann emphasizing that the only way for any player to make the Germany squad is to play regularly and shine.
