Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly called Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann to deliver the tough news: his dream of starting in World Cup 2026 is over.
Following Manuel Neuer’s international retirement in July 2024 and Marc-André ter Stegen’s recurring injuries, Baumann had established himself as Germany’s number one. As recently as last month, Nagelsmann had publicly confirmed the 33-year-old as the primary choice for the upcoming tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
However, in a dramatic U-turn, Nagelsmann and DFB Director Rudi Völler successfully convinced Neuer to come out of retirement. The legendary keeper will return as the undisputed starter for the 2026 campaign.
Key Details of the Shift
-
The Phone Call: According to Sky Sports, Nagelsmann contacted Baumann during his vacation in Spain on Monday to inform him he would now serve as the backup.
-
Baumann’s Reaction: Despite his deep disappointment, the veteran keeper has agreed to remain part of the squad in a secondary role.
-
Expanded Squad: German media reports suggest Nagelsmann plans to take four goalkeepers to the World Cup. Joining Neuer and Baumann will be Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel and Bayern Munich’s deputy Jonas Urbig.
