Al Masry suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Zamalek in the opening match of the second half of the 2026 Egyptian Premier League season, sparking fan outrage and increasing pressure on the management to make an immediate change in coach.

Kouki led the team in 37 matches, winning 16, drawing 13, and losing 8.

Al Masry reached the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup before being eliminated by Algerian side CR Belouizdad. They also exited the Egyptian Cup in the round of 16 against ZFC on penalties.

Al Masry still has a chance to win a title this season, having reached the semifinals of the Cairo Cup.

Al-Masry has identified Emad El-Nahhas as the successor to coach El-Kouki, citing his extensive experience in Egyptian football and hoping he can quickly make a difference with Salah Mohsen and his teammates.

El-Nahhas previously served as interim coach for Al-Ahly last September, successfully guiding the Red Devils back on track, before taking over Iraqi club Al-Zawraa for five months before being dismissed last month.

Al-Masry currently sits fifth in the Egyptian Premier League table with 32 points.
