Jose Mourinho’s absence from coaching will not last long, as he is close to returning to his former club.
Mourinho was fired from coaching Fenerbahçe last month after losing to Benfica in the Champions League play-offs.
According to Portuguese media reports, Mourinho has reached an agreement with Benfica on all the details to become the new coach of the Portuguese giants, succeeding Bruno Lage.
Benfica sacked Lage after a shock loss to Qarabag in the first round of the Champions League, following a very poor start to the season.
This will be Mourinho’s second spell as coach of Benfica; his first was in 2000, during his first experience as a coach, but it was unsuccessful, as he left after just 10 matches.
Mourinho is considered the most successful coach in the history of the Portuguese league, having led Porto to a historic treble in 2004, an achievement that has never been repeated before.
A return to the Portuguese league may be another step backward in Mourinho’s career, but it will at least give him the opportunity to participate in the Champions League after an absence of more than four years.
