Benfica coach Jose Mourinho shut down journalists’ questions about his potential move to Real Madrid, emphasizing that he is currently focused solely on his work with the Portuguese giants and finishing the season strongly.
Spanish media had reported that Mourinho was the leading candidate to succeed Alvaro Arbeloa at the helm of the Royal Club, at the behest of president Florentino Perez.
When asked about these reports, “The Special One” responded, “My next objective is to lead Benfica to the Champions League.”
He added, “If we win our next three matches, we will play in the biggest European competition next season. That’s the only thing on my mind right now.”
Benfica faces Valmelção next Saturday, followed by Sporting Braga, before concluding the season against Estoril on May 16 or 17.
Benfica are second in the Portuguese league standings with 75 points, and if Sporting Lisbon win their postponed match, they will be tied for the Champions League qualifying spot before the final rounds of the competition.
