Walid Regragui will remain as coach of the Moroccan national team until the 2026 World Cup, with significant structural changes to his coaching staff in preparation for the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Press reports had suggested that Regragui had submitted his resignation to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation after failing to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, before an official statement categorically denied this, confirming that Fouzi Lekjaa’s administration had not yet made a final decision regarding the coach’s future.
According to the Moroccan newspaper “Al-Sabah,” Lekjaa and his associates have decided to retain Regragui in his position, but with a major overhaul of his coaching staff.
Lekjaa wants to add Mohamed Ouahabi, the coach of Morocco’s under-20 national team who led the Atlas Lions to victory in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, as Regragui’s first assistant for the 2026 World Cup.
There is also a possibility that one of Walid Regragui’s assistants will leave, either Rachid Ben Mahmoud or Abdellah Bouhzama.
Consultative expertise will also be sought from figures such as Tarik Sektioui, who won the Arab Cup with the Moroccan national team, as well as Fathi Jamal, Jamal Ammouta, and Noureddine Naybet.
It is worth noting that Regragui led Morocco to a fourth-place finish in the 2022 World Cup, but failed twice to win the Africa Cup of Nations, exiting early in the 2024 edition and losing the final to Senegal in Morocco by a single goal.
