Marseille announced in an official statement that Nayef Aguerd has decided to undergo surgery to treat groin pain, less than three months before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
Aguerd has been suffering from this injury since the fall of 2025, but he preferred physiotherapy to surgery in order to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
However, Aguerd’s pain intensified in recent days, leading him to decide, in agreement with Marseille’s medical staff, to undergo surgery.
Initially, the Moroccan center-back’s absence from the pitch could last at least a month, and possibly longer depending on his recovery.
Aguerd is hopeful of recovering by mid-April and, consequently, participating in some of the final rounds of the French league, which concludes on May 15.
Aguerd’s primary goal remains to participate in the 2026 World Cup with the Moroccan national team, and this will depend mainly on his physical condition at that time.
The 29-year-old has 64 international caps for the Atlas Lions and was part of Walid Regragui’s squad that finished fourth in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
