The current sporting reasons at Manchester United were not the real motivation behind André Onana’s decision to leave for Trabzonspor. Money played a decisive role in the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s new destination.
This was revealed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, who indicated that Trabzonspor offered Onana a salary over the next year that would be higher than his current salary at Manchester United.
The 29-year-old earns £120,000 per week at United, and he would also earn this salary at Trabzonspor, but with bonuses and a signing-on fee, this figure could practically double.
At the same time, Trabzonspor will not pay Manchester United any money to sign Onana. He will move on a free loan for a year, and the option to buy remains unknown, and it is likely that it will not be implemented.
United signed goalkeeper Seny Lammens from Royal Antwerp in the final hours of the summer transfer window for €21 million. He is expected to become Ruben Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Turkish Altay Bayındır set to replace him.
It’s worth noting that Manchester United bought Onana two seasons ago from Inter for €55 million, but he has become a real crisis after failing to make any significant contribution in goal. This season, he has been confined to the bench except for the first-round match of the Carabao Cup.
