Mohamed Salah’s maternal grandfather, Abdel Aziz El-Bambi, passed away on Monday morning.
The news was announced by the Liverpool star’s uncle, and the funeral was held after noon prayers in Salah’s hometown of Nagrig, in the Basyoun district of Gharbia Governorate.
Salah was unable to attend the funeral after playing in Liverpool’s match against Manchester City on Sunday at Anfield.
Several photos and videos from the funeral of the Egyptian national team captain’s grandfather quickly circulated on social media.
Salah has not been having the best season, scoring only five goals for Liverpool across all competitions. He also played in the recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the English Premier League.
Salah participated with the Egyptian national team in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Pharaohs failed to win the title despite the “Egyptian King” scoring four goals. They reached the semi-finals before losing 1-0 to Senegal and then to Nigeria on penalties in the third-place match.
