Lionel Messi confirmed his ambition to participate in the 2026 World Cup with the Argentine national team, acknowledging that his age and fitness will determine his position with Lionel Scaloni’s squad in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Messi renewed his contract with Inter Miami until the end of 2028, indicating that he is not considering retirement yet, despite turning 39 next June.
When asked in a press interview about his participation in the World Cup, Messi said, “It’s exceptional to be able to be in the World Cup. I would definitely love it very much.”
He added, “I would like to be with the Argentine national team in the 2026 World Cup. I will evaluate this daily when I begin preparation for next season with Inter Miami. I will see if I can truly be 100% ready and be useful to the team, and then I will make a decision.”
“I’m very excited because it’s the World Cup. We won the last tournament, and being able to defend it on the pitch again is amazing, because playing for the national team has always been a dream,” he concluded.
