Speculation has been rife in recent hours regarding Kylian Mbappe’s availability for Real Madrid’s match against Atletico Madrid next Thursday in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup semi-final.
Mbappe suffered a knee sprain, and Real Madrid announced his absence without specifying a return date. Meanwhile, the newspaper L’Equipe reported that the Frenchman needs at least three weeks to recover.
However, recent reports suggest the injury is not serious and does not require such a long recovery period. It is possible Mbappe will return for the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. However, after the Real Betis match, coach Xabi Alonso simply stated that he does not know when the 26-year-old will return.
According to The Athletic, Mbappe will not be able to play against Atletico Madrid, contrary to earlier reports. Nevertheless, there is a chance he could feature in the final if Real Madrid manages to defeat Los Rojiblancos.
The final is scheduled for next Sunday against the winner of the Athletic Bilbao vs. Barcelona match. While it seems likely that Mbappé will miss it, there is a possibility he could recover in time and at least be available on the bench.
Mbappé is also expected to travel with the Real Madrid squad to Saudi Arabia in the hope of being fit for the final, unlike the other injured players who will remain in Spain for treatment.
It’s worth noting that Mbappé is Real Madrid’s top scorer this season, having scored 29 goals and provided 5 assists in 24 appearances across all competitions.
