Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé made no secret of his deep frustration after the club’s 4-2 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League. He launched a scathing attack on the entire team for their performance at the Estádio da Luz.
Mbappé gave Real Madrid the lead in the first half, but Benfica fought back to score twice. The French international pulled one back for Real Madrid with 15 minutes remaining, but José Mourinho’s men sealed the victory with a fourth goal in the final minute.
Speaking angrily after the match, Mbappé said, “It’s not about quality, or tactics, it’s about having more desire than the opponent.”
He added, “It was clear that everything was at stake for Benfica, while it wasn’t for us, and that’s the problem.”
He continued, “We deserve to be in this situation. We wanted to avoid the playoffs and have a break.”
He continued, “What we saw today wasn’t normal. The fourth goal was shameful. In fact, the third goal didn’t change anything either; it was just embarrassing to concede them. We have to change that because we’ve had three good matches.”
He concluded, “We lack consistency in our performance. We have to fix that. We can’t play well one day and badly the next… A champion team doesn’t do that.”
